Using a steel trowel to finish concrete takes a little bit of practice, but after watching this video you should have a good idea of how to use a hand trowel, how to hold it, and how to move it, to finish a small concrete floor like the one in the video. The most important part of finishing concrete is knowing when to start the finishing process. I like to only be able to press my fingers into the surface about a 1/4 of an inch when I start finishing. This tells me the concrete is firm enough to begin mag floating, it also tells me I'm not starting too early. If you start mag floating and steel troweling too early, you risk damaging the surface and causing problems like blistering and/or scaling. Finishing concrete by hand with a mag and trowel is a process that takes multiple passes over the surface. Mag float first, then use the steel trowel. You have to let the concrete dry of stiffen up in between passes. After each pass the concrete should look smoother than the previous one. Keep doing this process until the concrete is as smooth as you like it. For us, most of the time we will go over the concrete surface 3 to 5 passes to get a very smooth finish.
