We are using power trowels to put the finish on this 60' x 40' concrete floor slab. When we power trowel concrete, it's always done in steps. The first pass is done with a float machine. All that means is we slide on a larger "float" blade over the finish blades and trowel the first pass with these blades on the power trowel. The larger float blades work really well for removing bull float lines, filling small holes, dips, and dimples, and cutting down any small high areas. They also work up a nice cream on the surface faster than if you just use a combination blade. After the entire floor is floated, we take them off and use the finish blades to complete the troweling. It may take 2 to 5 passes with the finish blades to get a smooth, mirror like finish. Drying times will vary depending on outside temperatures and sun exposure. Finishing a large pole barn slab like this one is quite easy if you have the experience and the right equipment like the Marshalltown 46" trowel we are using.
