CONCRETE PUMP RENTAL
TO RENT OR BUY A PUMP TRUCK

Concrete pump rental is quite common for concrete contractors that place concrete everyday, but how often you rent a concrete pump truck may determine if it's time to buy a concrete pump truck.

Renting a concrete pump truck is really quite easy. There are many equipment rental companies who offer smaller concrete pump rentals for the contractor who wants to pump the concrete himself. For most contractors and homeowners it's much easier to rent the concrete pumping equipment from a business that owns their own concrete pump truck with a trained concrete pump operator.

When I need to rent a pump truck, I have 4 local concrete pumping companies I can call. I just call and tell them when I'm pouring and what time of day. If that works for their schedule they schedule me in, if they are busy I just call another pumping company until I find one that works best for my schedule.

When I rent a concrete boom pump truck, the rate is usually $800.00 dollars for the first 4 hours and $100.00 dollars an hour after that. When I rent a concrete trailer pump the rate is $550.00 dollars for the first 4 hours and $100.00 dollars an hour after that. Both those rates include a trained concrete pump operator.

DECIDING TO CONTINUE WITH CONCRETE PUMP RENTALS OR PURCHASE A CONCRETE PUMP TRUCK

For those contractors who pump a lot of concrete, the cost of the concrete pump rental can really start to add up. Eventually, after figuring out what you're spending on renting a concrete pump, it may be a better investment to purchase a new or used concrete pump.

The cost of renting isn't the only factor a contractor should consider, the volume of work you do in a year should also be an important consideration. If you're doing 200 - 300 jobs a year and you need a pump truck for half those jobs, it might make sense to have your own concrete pumper.

Lost time and labor expense while you wait for someone else's pump truck to show up is another consideration to think about. If you've been in the concrete business, you know delays happen from time to time. Waiting 2 or 3 hours with a crew of men standing around, significantly adds to the cost of renting the concrete pump.

ADVANTAGES OF OWNING YOUR OWN CONCRETE PUMP TRUCK

  1. Don't have to rely on someone else, the concrete pump is there when you need it.
  2. It's easier to coordinate with the concrete company what time you want concrete to show up.
  3. Scheduling multiple jobs, back to back, with no wait time means big savings on labor cost.
  4. Makes your company more efficient, you can place concrete faster.
  5. Less site preparation is needed, saving time and money.
  6. Can rent your pump out to others when you don't need it and make money.
  7. Creates a tax depreciation expense

SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE PURCHASING A CONCRETE PUMP

  1. The investment (or cost) of training a concrete pump operator.
  2. Do you buy a new concrete pump or a used concrete pump?
  3. Do you need a trailer pump or a concrete boom pump?
  4. How often will you use your concrete pump?
  5. How many other concrete pumps are available in your area, is buying really worth the expense?
  6. The cost of maintenance, cleaning, greasing, rebuilding the concrete pump, tires.
  7. The cost of buying concrete hoses, concrete pipe, concrete clamps & rubber gaskets.
  8. Continued safety training & trouble shooting maintenance.

Concrete pump rental may be the way to go for a lot of contractors, but for some concrete contractors, owning your own concrete pump truck might make more financial sense. Weigh the pros vs cons, costs vs savings, and make your decision to buy or continue to rent based on what's best for our company.
